A Snowy Day

Instructional Strategies

To do Now or Warm-up (if applicable): As kids come in, let them touch the ice cubes and check them again at end of lesson. What happens? Do you know why?

1.Read aloud Era Jack Keats “Snowy Day”  ask the “who, what, where, when, why, and how” questions

2. Reread and look at illustrations: What color combinations did Keats use? Talk about the art   elements

3. Students should choose light blue or pink construction paper and paint their snowy day with tempera and ivory soap flakes and use big brushes. Place old butcher paper over tables. Write Name, Date, Room

4. Color template of a child in a snowsuit and then cut and paste it into the picture.

5.The following week:

 Let kids look at the class works and in table groups ask them to point out where they used lines, shapes, colors, texture, and space. How did using ivory soap in the tempera make it change?

6. Let a few show off their coats and look at the lines shapes, colors, and textures. “A Coat Show!”

  Make the point artists create for a variety of reasons. The clothes we wear were designed by artists called fashion designers. They use the elements of art and principles of design too.

Family Communication:

Write brief note or means of communication about student art learning.

Students will create their art, write their statements, and have both uploaded to our Art Sonia art gallery. Parents may view and respond.
